Why is copper not used for heating coils?

Why is copper not used for heating coils?

Since copper is a good conductor of electricity, it offer less resistance. Low resistance offer less heating effect. Therefore copper is not used for heating coil.

What happens when a coil is heated?

In a heating coil, the water or steam is hotter than the air going across the outside finned-tube surface. The heat is removed from the fluid and transferred to the air. In a cooling coil, the water or refrigerant is cooler than the air, and the heat from the air is transferred to the water or refrigerant.

Can copper be used as heating element?

But copper also has shortcomings as a material for a heating element. As the temperature of a copper heating element increases, the electrical resistance increases at a rate which is undesirably high.

Can we use Nichrome wire instead of copper wire?

melting point for a nichrome wire is greater than copper wire, so that the resistance at nichrome wire will be greater than copper wire. Therefore, the electric current can flow (maximum flow) on the nichrome wire will be smaller than the copper wire.

Can heating element electrocute?

Nothing. It’s not that heating elements can’t shock you, it’s that your bodies resistance is high and the resistence of the element is low.

Can copper wire be used for heating?

The amount of voltage one needs depends on how many watts of heating power you want. Typically, because of the low resistance of copper, you use high-resistance Nichrome or Kanthal wire. Copper itself isn’t typically used.

How many times Nichrome has more resistance than copper?

Obviously Nichrome because resistivity of Nichrome is greater than that of Copper. As mention above, both wires are of same length and having same cross section area. Therefore resistance of Nichrome wire will be more than that of Copper. Since more resistance means more I^2R loss (which is dissipated as heat).
