Can you oil your gun too much?

Can you oil your gun too much?

Much like oil, too much is of no value and can actually be a detriment. When applying grease, rub it into the surfaces to be treated and wipe off any visible excess. Both oil and grease will degrade over time, meaning periodic reapplication would be a good idea.

Can you over lubricate?

Seal damage is another negative side effect of overgreasing. Grease guns can produce up to 15,000 psi, and when you overgrease a bearing housing, the lip seals can rupture, allowing contaminants such as water and dirt to gain access into the bearing housing.

How much oil do you leave on a gun?

It all depends on your firearm but the general rule of thumb is, a drop or two is all you need! Consulting your owner’s manual will usually tell you where to apply oil. You will be surprised to find that a lot of moving parts don’t need any oil.

Can you over lubricate a pistol?

If you over-lube the firearm and it causes problems, you can wipe it off. If you under-lube the firearm and it gets corroded, you’ll have a lot of work to do to clean it, and may end up needing to replace parts of it that have corroded too much. Too much is better than not enough.

What happens if you put too much grease?

Overgreasing by applying too much grease to a bearing at one time can result in a seal failure and generate heat in the bearing housing. By putting too much grease in a bearing, you can create heat from fluid friction. Because the heat has nowhere to go, it can begin to degrade the grease by causing too much churning.

Can you over lubricate bearings?

In instances where bearings are in an electric motor, over-lubricating those bearings can cause serious damage. If the excess grease reaches the motor windings, the windings will get insulated with grease, causing inefficient performance, overheating, and bearing failure.

Do new guns need oiling?

Yes. You need to remove all factory grease and oils from barrel just before firing the first rime. This will prevent it from “baking in”, thus making cleaning harder. On a rifle, look up and read or watch video on “breaking in a barrel.”
