Can MRP be different in different states?

The consumer affairs department has said to its advisory to state governments that there cannot be two different maximum retail prices (MRPs) for the same packaged item within a state. It has advised that all packaged items, including beverages, cannot be sold at two different MRPs in shops, multiplexes or airports.

Can the same product have different MRP?

While there is no principle of law or legal proposition to have different MRPs for the same product, there is no explicit prohibition also, under the Legal Metrology Act, 2009 or the rules framed.

Can a product have two MRP?

It is compulsory for all the sellers to mark the MRP. Also, it is prohibited to state two MRP on the same product. This has been brought to ensure that the consumers do not get confused in paying the price at places where the items are expected to be charged higher like airports, a movie hall.

Is there any rule for MRP?

Maximum retail price is labelled on every product. It is the highest price determined by the manufacturers for a specific product before the sale in India. Retailers cannot charge customers more than MRP. Maximum retail price printed on a product is inclusive of all taxes.

Is GST applicable on MRP products?

GST included in MRP MRP is inclusive of all taxes including GST. It must be noted that retailers cannot charge GST over and above the MRP. GST is already included in the MRP printed on the product.

Is MRP mandatory in India?

Manufacturers must identify the MRP inclusive of all taxes on all pre-packed items intended for retail sale under the Standards of Weights and Measures (Packaged Commodities) Rules[1]. This is a requirement to ensure that consumers are not misled about the price of packaged goods by agents/dealers and shopkeepers.
