A person gets his or her genes from both parents in different combinations. Their parents, in turn, get their genes from their parents. So, if your genetic combination is similar to that of your grandparents, you end up looking more like them than your parents!

Perhaps a few rich people could afford to have their portraits painted, but even then, there is no way for later generations to know how good a likeness the picture was.

Different combinations of genes for one of these traits create a bunch of different physical attributes. Even though we get all our DNA from our parents, each of us has a unique combination of genes. Sometimes that means we don’t look like them at all. There are tons of genes that shape our appearance.
It’s often said you’re equally genetically related to parents as (full) siblings: your ‘relatedness’ is a half. However, unlike for parents, the amount of shared inherited DNA between siblings varies, and it’s only 1/2 on average.
