Why is grappling done barefoot?

Training without shoes enables us to make a little more contact on our kicks with each other, and have far fewer accidental injuries when grappling because we aren’t being hit with any hard heels or steel-toed boots! Now, with all of that being said, some students need or prefer to wear shoes.

Why are martial arts done barefoot?

It is a much more enjoyable if the flooring is super clean, as well as our opponent. Some dojos use mats for their flooring and just like a gymnastics gym, being barefoot helps the mats to last longer and to stay clean longer. There are other reasons in martial arts that we want our students to have bare feet.

Do you have to be barefoot in Jiu Jitsu?

We go barefoot on the mats and training Brazilian Jiu jitsu is a barefoot pursuit, but make sure to wear shoes off them. Most BJJ clubs are careful about the cleanliness and hygiene of their training area, and at Kyuzo we are particularly careful about keeping our training surface as hygienic as possible.

Can you wear wrestling shoes in Jiu Jitsu?

Wrestling shoes and other footwear are not allowed to be worn in most BJJ competitions. Since shoes aren’t allowed in competition, people who are inclined to compete would best be served by training all of their techniques barefoot since that is how they will need to execute them in a competition setting.
