Drona was in extreme poverty and life line to sustain was given by bhishma on behalf of Hastinapur kingdom so he cannot switch side as he is indebted to the kingdom of Hastinapur. Also, he was a very poor brahmin before he became the guru of Kaurvas and Pandavas.
