What kind of wood is Ovangkol?

The Ovangkol — also known as Mozambique, Amazoue, Amazique or Shedua wood — is a small- to medium-size hardwood tree native to tropical West Africa. Other exotic wood species in the genus Guibourtia include Bubinga and Tiete rosewood. Where it’s common, Ovangkol is used in flooring, cabinetry and furniture.

Ovangkol is found in Africa from the Ivory Coast and Ghana, to southern Nigeria and Gabon.

It’s a fairly heavy wood. In my experience, it’s lighter in weight than cocobolo but heavier than EIR. When I want a rich, “chocolatety” tone I reach for my OM-21. When I want good bass with some high end sparkle and crunch, I go for the 414.
