Can you RAID 1 with 3 drives?

Can you RAID 1 with 3 drives?

You can use as many drives as you want for RAID1. They will all be mirrored, and written on at the same time, and be exact copies of each other. The fact that there isn’t a card that do more than x drives doesn’t meant anything about the concept.

How many drives can you have in RAID 1?

two
RAID 1 requires a minimum of two physical drives, as data is written simultaneously to two places. The drives are essentially mirror images of each other, so if one drive fails, the other one can take over and provide access to the data that’s stored on that drive.

Can I mix hard drives in RAID?

Must hard drives in a RAID array be identical? No. It is perfectly valid to use hard drives from different manufacturers, model numbers, sizes, and rotational speed (spindle speed or RPM).

Can you add more drives to a RAID 1?

No matter how many drives you add to RAID 1, the size never increases. What you increase is how many drives can fail and how good your read performance is. It never changes. The size is always the size of the smallest drive in the array.

Does RAID 1 need a hot spare?

Hot spares act as standby drives in RAID 1, RAID 5, or RAID 6 volume groups. They are fully functional drives that contain no data. A hot spare drive is not dedicated to a specific volume group. Instead, you can use a hot spare drive for any failed drive in the storage array with the same capacity or smaller capacity.

How do I add a hot spare to RAID 1?

Configuring a RAID Group Hot Spare

  1. Go to Main Menu > Storage & Snapshots > Storage/Snapshot.
  2. Verify that the NAS contains one or more available disks.
  3. Select a storage pool or single static volume.
  4. Click Manage.
  5. Select a RAID 1, RAID, 5, RAID 6, or RAID 10 group.
  6. SelectManage > Configure Spare Drive.

What is RAID Level 3?

RAID 3 is a RAID configuration that uses a parity disk to store the information generated by a RAID controller instead of striping it with the data. Because the parity information is on a separate disk, RAID 3 does not perform well when tasked with numerous small data requests.

Can you RAID 2 different drives?

RAID 0 is normally used to increase performance, although it can also be used as a way to create a large logical volume out of two or more physical disks. A RAID 0 setup can be created with disks of differing sizes, but the storage space added to the array by each disk is limited to the size of the smallest disk.

Can you RAID different drives?

For a normal RAID, you can RAID different sized drives together just like you can with same-sized drives. The only “gotcha” is that the RAID will treat all drives in the array as if they were all the same size as your smallest drive.

Are RAID 1 drives hot swappable?

If you’re interested in using hot-swapping in a RAID configuration, your best option is to use RAID Level 1 architecture, also know as “disk mirroring.” With RAID 1, all of the server data is mirrored onto multiple disks. Most newer IDE and SCSI hard disks support hot-swapping.
