Are cracked mugs safe to use?

A coffee mug that is cracked or chipped on the inside is not safe to use. Ceramic mugs with superficial scratches are safe to use as the scratches are usually on the surface of the glaze. However, in the case of cracks inside the mug, you are better off replacing the mug.

Is cracked ceramic safe to use?

Fine cracking on the surface of a ceramic dish’s glaze is known as “crazing.” If you have a new dish that you know was made with safe glazes, you can continue to use it. Some older dishes contain trace amounts of lead and other heavy metals, however. These can leach into food through the crazed surface.

Try to fix it.

  1. Apply super glue to the crack. You’ll need a heavy amount to keep the mug from leaking.
  2. Put the coffee cup into a saucepan and cover with milk. Bring to a boil, then let simmer for a few minutes.
  3. Use PVA (polyvinyl acetate), also called white glue, to repair the crack.

How do you save a cracked mug?

Clear the area, get your super glue, some paper towel and Loctite Glue Remover. Clean and dry the chipped or cracked surface. Apply super glue to the surface and then either attach any broken pieces you’ve found, or fill the crack or chip with the glue.

Are ceramic coffee mugs toxic?

If ceramics are baked for long enough at hot enough temperatures, they may still be safe, but if not, the lead can leach into food and cause lead poisoning. Acidic food or drink is especially likely to cause lead to leach out of ceramics, unfortunately for coffee drinkers with favorite earthenware mugs.

Total Lead content in the glaze or coating of modern mugs (as detectable with an XRF) is not regulated. As long as mugs are not leaching Lead at the time of manufacture (when they are brand-new), they are considered to be safe to use — even if the Lead content of the glaze is very high.
