Is Evangelion a good anime?

That said, 1) Its one of the most popular anime series of all time, and has a HUGE, rabid fan base. If you want to be a part of the “animaverse” at all, it would be a GOOD idea to watch Evangelion. 2) Its an early “classic” anime: one of the few series that very strongly influenced anime as a whole..

How would you describe Evangelion?

Basically, Evangelion is a story about two aliens who come to populate the same planet by accident with the souls of their dead friends by making vessels for them to be reincarnated in. They fight, Shinji whines a bit, they merge, they decide the whole thing is silly and call it off.

Why was Evangelion remade?

The film tetralogy uses digital ink and paint, some 3D CG animation, and provides new scenes, settings and characters, with a completely new conclusion in the fourth and final film. Another stated intention of the series is for it to be more accessible to non-fans than the original TV series and films were.

Taken in a vacuum, Evangelion is at least as strong a show as Cowboy Bebop (which is equally iconic) or Eureka Seven (which is strangely underrated, but which ultimately has a pretty similar structure and pretty similar flaws). But, its outsized impact on the industry and its unusual place in history vastly overshadows its merit as a work.

Is Evangelion worth watching?

Yes. Evangelion is a well-crafted show with strong characters and an interesting plot. It has some animation problems, particularly in episodes 5-6 (when the animation director was swapped out at the last minute) and in the latter half of the series (when the budget was running out), and it has some pacing problems in the first four episodes.
