The film tetralogy uses digital ink and paint, some 3D CG animation, and provides new scenes, settings and characters, with a completely new conclusion in the fourth and final film. Taken in a vacuum, Evangelion is at least as strong a show as Cowboy Bebop (which is equally iconic) or Eureka Seven (which is strangely underrated, but which ultimately has a pretty similar structure and pretty similar flaws).
