Is it safe to camp in a field with cows?

Cows are generally quite placid, and as long as you are not scaring them with too much noise, or getting in their way you should be fine. They will show a little curiosity about the tent to check that it’s not something that is a threat to them.

Are cows safe to be around?

We searched newspaper reports over two decades, and identified 54 separate attacks by cattle on members of the public out walking. Of these, 24\% were fatal. Injuries included fractures from kicking, lacerations, punctured lungs, bruising, black eyes, joint dislocation, nerve damage and unconsciousness.

Generally speaking cattle are quite safe. Bulls are usually OK providing they are in a field with cows; if they are on their own they can be more troublesome. A bull should not be left on its own in a field with a public right of way going through it, so encountering this situation should be rare.

What to do when cows run at you?

Remain calm and continue walking on quietly and quickly, trying to pass around them without making any startling movements. Cows will most likely leave you alone once they realize you are not a threat. If you detect an aggressive cow or a threatening group of cows, keep moving calmly and do not make direct eye contact.

Are Bulls allowed in fields with footpaths?

Never keep them in fields with public rights of way, statutory or other permitted access. Remember, it is against the law to keep a recognised dairy bull in a field crossed by a public right of way. They can also be kept locked as they will not be sited on public rights of way.
