What do trees do in each season?
The trees leaf out in the spring, form a dense canopy during the summer, release their leaves to fall to the ground in the autumn, stand naked during the cold of winter, and leaf out once again when the next spring comes. Today in Nature’s Depths we look at these seasonal transformations a little more carefully.
What happens to trees in the 4 seasons?
In spring, the weather begins to get warmer and trees and other plants grow new leaves. Summer is the hottest season and has long, usually sunny, days. In autumn, the weather becomes mild and leaves start falling from many types of trees. They do this to save energy until spring, when it will be easier to find food.
How do trees change?
When the days grow shorter, chlorophyll dies off and other chemicals become the main source of color. At the same time, the tree starts to grow a layer of scar tissue at the bottom of each leaf’s stem. Over time, the connection between the leaf and the tree weakens enough that the wind or gravity pulls the leaf down.
How plants change through the seasons?
Plants can sense changes in the seasons. Leaves change color and drop each autumn in some climates (Figure below). Leaves changing color is a response to the shortened length of the day in autumn. Because of the tilt of the Earth, during winter days, there are less hours of light than during summer days.
How do trees change from summer to fall?
The summer sunlight triggers the leaves to keep making more chlorophyll. But trees are very sensitive to changes in their environment. As summer fades into fall, the days start getting shorter and there is less sunlight. This is a signal for the leaf to prepare for winter and to stop making chlorophyll.
What causes the seasons in plants and trees?
As the Earth travels around the Sun in its orbit, the length of our days and nights varies from season to season. This is because the earth’s axis of rotation is tilted in respect to its plane of orbit around the sun.
What happens to trees in summer season?
Again, in summer, the trees are in the peak of their lives. They stretch their leafy branches towards the sun. The branches are full and heavy with leaves. When the autumn begins, the days become shorter and the tree shivers in cold.

What causes the different seasons?
The earth’s spin axis is tilted with respect to its orbital plane. This is what causes the seasons. When the earth’s axis points towards the sun, it is summer for that hemisphere. Midway between these two times, in spring and autumn, the spin axis of the earth points 90 degrees away from the sun.
What are two impacts of the change of seasons on plants?
Seasonal changes in precipitation and temperature affect soil moisture, evaporation rates, river flows, lake levels, and snow cover. Leaves fall and plants wither as cold and dry seasons approach. These changes in vegetation affect the type and amount of food available for humans and other organisms.
