Why is there no air conditioning on the London Underground?
Tube trains Conventional air conditioning was initially ruled out on the deep lines because of the lack of space for equipment on trains and the problems of dispersing the waste heat these would generate.
Does London Underground have air conditioning?
Currently, only the Circle, Hammersmith & City, District and Metropolitan Lines have air con built in to their trains. Although rather shockingly, this adds up to less than half of the entire Tube network.
Why is it so hot on the tube?
Over the years the Tube tunnels have been heated up by the trains as their engines, aerodynamic drag and, most of all, braking dumped heat into the air, which became absorbed by the surrounding clay, leading to overheating on the deepest lines.
What is used to cool the subway system in London now?
In 2015, TfL introduced a fan cooling system at St Paul’s Tube station. The system, which was designed by London Underground’s crack cooling squad, pulled fresh air from the street and pumped water around pipes at a rate of 16 litres per second to cool the air by seven degrees before pumping it out at platform level.
Does the central line have air conditioning?
Londoners have long complained about summer temperatures on the tube, and for good reason, Transport for London (TfL) has admitted that the Bakerloo and Central lines can soar above 30C in the height of summer.
Are UK trains air conditioned?
We have got air conditioning on just over 40 per cent of our trains. Two thirds of our trains are about 30 years old, dating back to a time when air conditioning was not common in the UK. It’s one of the benefits of the new trains that we’re getting – they’re all being built with air conditioning included.
Is there AC in the tube?
Less than half of the Tube network is currently served by air-conditioned trains, covering the Circle, Hammersmith & City, District and Metropolitan lines. TfL Rail, as well as Northern City, London Overground, Thameslink and tram services also have air conditioning.

Do London buses have air conditioning?
Almost all London buses now have air-conditioned driver cabs, and TfL has written to all London’s bus operators about ensuring air conditioning systems are working as they should.
