Once you’ve soaked your seeds and started the germination process, the next stage is to rinse and drain them until they start sprouting.
How do you know when sprouts are done?
Sprouts are generally ready to eat when the hull/seed covers have dropped and the first pair of leaves have opened. You know they are ready to eat when they are 1/2 – 2” (1.30 – 5 cm) long. This is usually after 4-6 days.
What seeds should not be soaked before planting?
Avoid soaking small seeds such as lettuce, radish, and so on. Germination of these species often doesn’t need a lot of help, and wet seeds are much more difficult to handle, leading to over-sowing and waste. Lastly, tropical native plants like chillies need a long growing season to ripen their fruit.
What happens to a seed when it is soaked in water overnight?
Too much soaking in water and a seed will drown. It is recommended that you only soak most seeds for 12 to 24 hours and no more than 48 hours. The seeds of some species of plants can survive longer soakings, but you should only do this if the specific instructions for this species recommend so.
How long does it take seeds to sprout in water?
24-48 hours
When germinating in water, seeds need only 24-48 hours to pop their stems, though cultivators can keep them soaking for up to a week as needed. Water germination is faster because the seed gets all the moisture it needs immediately, and the shell softens and cracks more easily after soaking.
