Publishing on Amazon is free to you. There are no costs to getting your book(s) self-published through this platform. If you publish on Amazon KDP, you can publish elsewhere. You cannot publish elsewhere if your book is enrolled in Kindle Unlimited, however.
Can I self publish the same book on multiple sites?
If you signed Amazon’s exclusivity agreement or otherwise encumbered the rights, maybe not, but if it’s your book and you’re self-publishing, you absolutely can. I’ve published some of my books through half a dozen websites: Kindle Direct Publishing, CreateSpace, Nook Press, Smashwords, iBooks, Lightning Source, etc.

However, if you are selling paperback books on Amazon, the cost to print the book will be deducted by Amazon from your book royalties. This means that when you sell a paperback book, you will essentially pay for the price to print the book.

Amazon KDP Select – Special program where you can ONLY sell on Amazon for 90 days. You cannot sell on any other vendor or site until that 90 days is up. Your book is automatically put into “Kindle Unlimited” and you get 5 days (if it hasn’t changed since I last looked) to mark your book as “free” to do promos.

As most have pointed out, yes you can join KDP and publish elsewhere as long as you don’t enrol in KDP select, which basically means you’re ‘all in’ with KDP. Just wanted to give you my own perspective and share a tactic that can work very well for authors. I personally am exclusive KDP.
