What is LNG peak shaving?
Peak shaving is one the most common domestic uses for LNG today: Peak shaving is when LNG is stored at a power plant so that in times of peak demand the utility can tap into the LNG in order to increase power output to meet demand spikes. There are over 50 operating peak shaving facilities in the United States today.
How does peak shaving work?
The basic concept behind peak shaving is very simple: With on-site storage, you charge your batteries whenever electricity rates are at their lowest (i.e. during off-peak hours or with your free solar energy) You then discharge those same batteries to avoid paying peak prices during the most expensive times of the day.
What is the difference between CNG and LNG?
Like CNG, liquefied natural gas also occupies less space than it did in its gaseous state. Liquified natural gas can be transported in barrels. The process of creating LNG is more expensive, so the price of LNG is higher than CNG, but it is a great opportunity to transport natural gas over long distances effectively.
What is an LNG Power Plant?
The power plants take natural gas from natural gas pipelines, liquefy it in small-scale liquefaction facilities, and store it in cryogenic tanks. The LNG is regasified and burned by the power plants when needed. Some ships, trucks, and buses have specially designed LNG tanks to use LNG as fuel.
How many LNG plants are there in the United States?
110 LNG facilities
There are more than 110 LNG facilities operating in the U.S. performing a variety of services.
What is cryogenic LNG?
LNG is a clear, odorless, non-toxic, non-corrosive, cryogenic liquid at atmospheric pressure. The density of LNG is approximately 0.4–0.5 kg/L, depending on temperature, pressure and composition, compared to water at 1.0 kg/L.
What is load shaving?
Load shifting and peak shaving are two demand side management tactics used for optimizing energy usage. These are terms that tend to be used synonymously, especially in the context of cost reductions. While both of these concepts refer to useful energy management methods, there are slight differences between the two.
Why is peak shaving important?
With peak shaving you avoid peaks in energy consumption that are inefficient, unnecessary and costly. Fluctuating energy demand is strenuous for energy assets like generators and grid connections. Our batteries clip these peaks, resulting in significant savings.
Which one is better CNG or LPG?
LPG has high calorific value of 90 to 95 MJ/m3 compared to CNG which has calorific value of as low as 35 to 40 MJ/m3. Thus, LPG is more efficient fuel than biogas, petrol, diesel, kerosene and CNG. Cost of CNG vs LPG: CNG is cost effective and convenient compared to LPG gas.
Is LNG used for power generation?
This energy is stored in LNG as cold energy. At an unloading terminal, LNG is evaporated into gas phase at ambient temperature before pumping into the natural gas transmission system. In process of regasification the large part of energy stored in LNG may be recovered and used for electricity generation.
