Personality traits, abilities, likes and dislikes, your belief system or moral code, and the things that motivate you — these all contribute to self-image or your unique identity as a person. People who can easily describe these aspects of their identity typically have a fairly strong sense of who they are.

We all have a certain image of ourselves – beliefs about the kind of person we are. Having a strong sense of identity seems to be desirable, something that brings comfort and security . Identity also helps us to make decisions and to know how to behave. We’re constantly faced with complex decisions and circumstances.

Social identity refers to the ways that people’s self-concepts are based on their membership in social groups. Examples include sports teams, religions, nationalities, occupations, sexual orientation, ethnic groups, and gender. Affiliation with a group confers self-esteem, which helps to sustain the social identity.

Your identity is automatically placed upon you from birth. It is up to you to believe, accept and shape it to your true you. As we grow older our identity shapeshifts it acquires new meaning through our achievements, our appearance, our likes and dislikes, our sexuality, who we associate with.

Why is identity important today?

Identity plays an important role in empowering individuals to exercise their rights and responsibilities fairly and equitably in a modern society. But to be able to access those rights, one needs to be able to prove that they are who they claim to be.

Identity is the qualities, beliefs, personality, looks and/or expressions that make a person (self-identity as emphasized in psychology) or group (collective identity as pre-eminent in sociology). A psychological identity relates to self-image (one’s mental model of oneself), self-esteem, and individuality.
