  2. Check any wear at the side walls of the crown and on ring grooves.
  3. Check for any cracking at top due to the thermal and mechanical stress, check also for high temperature corrosion.

Piston replacement intervals are typically outlined in your machine’s factory service manual. Using dirt bikes as an example, many manufacturers outline a piston and ring replacement schedule of every six races or 15-30 hours for a four-stroke, depending on the machine.

How do you test worn piston rings?

To further confirm worn piston rings are the problem, do a wet compression test. Here you open the spark plug and inject a bit of oil (about a tablespoon) into the cylinder. If the compression increases, your piston rings are bad.

Diagnosis: To detect damage in piston rings, use a leak-down test. The test measures the amount of air leaking into the crankcase from the area above the piston. Damaged rings should be replaced to avoid damage to other piston parts and the whole engine.

What causes worn piston rings?

Engine oil quality, bad combustion process, wrong fuel timing, worn cylinders; are the normal cause of piston ring wear. Sticky rings due to carbon or sludge deposit, and breaking or crack on the ring can result due to wear.
