Do I need a preamp in my studio?
Most probably yes! A preamp is one of those essential items for your studio. If you use a condenser microphone, which requires 48v phantom power to work, you’ll need a preamp to provide it! The audio signal from microphones is weak, so they need a preamp to translate it into a stronger “Line level” signal.
Does a mic preamp make a difference?
A high quality microphone preamp, however, will do much more than just make your mic level louder. It will deliver a cleaner, more accurate signal, with higher gain, lower noise, less distortion, and more headroom.
Is preamp or mic more important?
To put it simply, A good preamp can make a bad mic sound good, but a bad preamp can make a good mic sound bad. Does that mean I’d rather record with a Radio Shack mic and a 1073 over an u87 and Presonus preamp?
How important are mic preamps?
Most audio engineers know the purpose of a microphone preamplifier is to increase the gain of the mic. Beyond that basic task, mic preamps can color the sound and help skilled users create a signature sound.
Should I upgrade my mic?
In addition to looking great, I find that upgrading your mic will give you a much more noticeable upgrade in sound quality than upgrading your preamp. For example, the preamp in the EVO 4 that we are giving away, is quite affordable, but paired with a great mic will give you fantastic sound!
How do I choose a microphone preamp?
If you want a mic preamp that can give you both transparent and colored sonic results, you might look for a preamp with a switchable transformer. If you know you’ll always want some character from your mic preamp, look for one that has a transformer in the signal path.
