What is a pancake holster?
Pancake style holsters feature two pieces of material sewn together to create a flat-type pouch – which many people say resembles a pancake. You can wear three-slot pancake holsters on your strong side, or as a cross-draw holster on your weaker side.
How much leather Do I need to make a holster?
The weight for holsters should be between 6-10 oz.: I prefer 7-8 oz. In the first photograph below you can see the minimum tools I recommend for making holsters. It includes a rawhide mallet, and a leather sewing palm.
Is it OK to store a gun in a holster?
Unless the leather is well cared for and regularly oiled, the answer would be no. Dry leather absorbs moisture right out of the air in humid environments and storing your weapon in such a holster will cause rust to form in the areas where the leather comes into contact with the weapon.

What does FBI cant mean?
Holster cant is the angle at which the gun ride in the holster. A gun that is carried vertically in the holster has zero degree of cant and is in a neutral or “straight-drop” position. An FBI cant is usually between 10 or 20 degrees, most commonly 15 degrees forward.

Can you make a leather holster for a large pistol?
If you want to make a holster for a larger pistol, you will likely need to make significant adjustments to the pattern (holster pattern-making is beyond the scope of this instructable) and some trial and error will likely be involved. Since leather is an organic material, it can vary significantly from one piece to the next.
Can I use Corel Draw to make a holster pattern?
Prepare your pattern for cutting. If your holster is for a 1911, a Beretta 92, a 9mm or .40 S&W Glock, or similarly sized pistol, you should be able to use the Corel Draw file I’ve included in this instructable.
Does Tandy Leather sell holster kits?
Fortunately, Tandy Leather sells holster kits that are obviously aimed at folks like me. They have a few different options available. My local Tandy store stocks most of these. For this project, I purchased the Bullseye Concealed Semi-Automatic Holster Kit. It’s an inside-the-waistband holster, obviously intended for medium-sized pistols.
