Heavy Tanks were a result of the limitations of technology for their time. As a result, because technology improved, their role simply got replaced. Back in the Interwar Period and WW2 where heavy tanks were the most prevalent, engineers were heavily limited by the engines they could put in their tanks.

Why are tanks heavy?
Tank is so heavy because everything adds weight. For example, to protect against 14.5mm you needs 50mm steel, which 400kg/m2. For 3 to 4 people, you need several m2, which is several tonnes, e.g. 3–4 tonnes. That is just armor alone.
