RAID arrays have been used for more than 40 years to increase the performance of hard disk drive (HDD) storage systems. But a single solid state drive (SSD) RAID array can offer performance which is comparable to many HDD RAID arrays, and is therefore often seen as an alternative to an SSD RAID array.

Can you RAID 0 a boot drive?

You can only get RAID 0 with a hardware controller or with another two disks that don’t contain a Windows installation. The configuration you would need is one Windows boot disk and two other disks configured in RAID 0.

Is RAID bad for SSD?

Storage systems generally do not use RAID to pool SSDs for performance purposes. Flash-based SSDs inherently offer higher performance than HDDs, and enable faster rebuilds in parity-based RAID. Rather than improve performance, vendors typically use SSD-based RAID to protect data if a drive fails.

Important to note that you can’t set up RAID 0 without formatting (initializing) the drives as RAID 0. You would have to back-up your data before creating the raid.
