Why was Jorah’s dad at the wall?

He was getting on in years and wanted to pass lordship of Bear Island to Jorah. So he voluntarily went to the Wall as a sort of retirement plan. Jorah took over his father’s seat, pissed it all away by going into debt and getting caught slaving, and was forced into exile.
