In many cases, a retainer can fix slight shifts of your teeth once your braces have been removed. While this method of teeth straightening may not fully work, retainers can make minimal corrections. Retainers can also be used if your teeth have moved to an abnormal position after the braces are taken out.

Most often, our orthodontist will recommend you wear your retainers for 12 hours per day for the first 3 months, then sleeping hours after that for as long as you want your teeth to remain straight. This is to ensure your teeth do not begin to shift back into their original position.

It is normal for your retainer to feel tight after six (6 ) years because teeth always shift a bit. If you see spacing or crowding, you should consider wearing the retainer at night again. If the retainer feels very tight, it means that your teeth are moving or have moved a lot.
