Can keys open other doors?
They allow you access to multiple doors in buildings and make it much easier on those needing access. A good example of how master keys work is found within an apartment building. If the building has been master keyed, the same key will open any apartment door in the building.
Is every door key unique?
Most house keys are not even close to unique. First, different lock lines are mechanically different, so that you can’t move keys between them. So the keyway on a Schlage cylinder is different from the keyway on a Kwikset cylinder – and a key for one won’t physically fit in the other.
Can another key unlock my car?
Yes. Car keys are not unique, but they are getting more and more unique as time passes. Also, it not uncommon with worn out keys and lock cylinders. Worn out keys work as ‘bump keys ‘ and if you wiggle it out in the cylinder, it might work out.
Is it obvious which way the door should go?
In most cases though, it’s obvious which way the door should go because there’s one way that’s much less in-the-way than the others. Sometimes it really doesn’t matter one way or the other and you just pick one. Internal doors should open “into” a room, as long as there is an obvious “into” direction.
How do you open a locked door from the outside?
If exterior doors open outward and this puts the hinge on the outside, you could potentially open a locked door by removing the hinge pins. Ability to remove the hinge pins from inside the room makes it easier to keep people out and harder to imprison someone in their own room or for someone to become trapped there accidentally.
Do doors open in or out in a house?
Exterior doors and doors to rooms typically open inward. Closet doors typically open outward (for obvious reasons). In cases where one side isn’t clearly the “inside” (like a door between one large room and another) it’s a little more ambiguous.
What are some common problems with keyless door locks?
Don’t drill the lock (unless you have some good drill bits and a big battery and a lot of time). The most common problem by far is that a key is copied by somebody who hasn’t cleaned their machine or hasn’t calibrated the machine in years or both.
