About 52\% of prospective students write the letter and get it signed from recommender. We don’t know what percentage of 52\% got admission, but from real life experience, universities assume the authenticity of the recommendation letter. Probably very few (less than 1\%) might check the authenticity.

Do universities reach out to recommenders?

Though they hardly (almost never) do it but they can, theoretically. Also, most of the universities send a link to the recommenders’ email addresses and ask them to fill in some forms and/or write a recommendation on the portal page. This gets saved and used as recommendation along with your application.

This is probably a bit late of an answer. Yes, you can submit the Common Application while your recommendations have not yet been uploaded, as long as the recommender is already assigned to the University. The college will recieve it as soon as the recommender uploads it to the common app.

What if my recommendation letters are late?

Following up on late letters often is petrifying. Email the faculty member and explain that the graduate program contacted you because your application is incomplete as they have not received all of your recommendation letters. Most faculty will immediately apologize, perhaps say that they forgot, and promptly send it.

Do college professors check sources?

College professors often know of or about many of the authors. And they often know the type of articles that a given journal tends to publish. So if something seems fishy, they will check out the source.
