Can you make a RAID array with SSD?

Can you make a RAID array with SSD?

RAID arrays have been used for more than 40 years to increase the performance of hard disk drive (HDD) storage systems. But a single solid state drive (SSD) RAID array can offer performance which is comparable to many HDD RAID arrays, and is therefore often seen as an alternative to an SSD RAID array.

Can you RAID 1 with different size drives?

If different sized hard drives must be used, the total capacity will be bound by the disk of the smallest size in the group. In a RAID 1 configuration, the size of target disk must be greater or equal to the one of the source disk.

Do all drives in a RAID need to be the same?

Must hard drives in a RAID array be identical? No. It is perfectly valid to use hard drives from different manufacturers, model numbers, sizes, and rotational speed (spindle speed or RPM).

Can you run RAID on external hard drives?

You can buy USB enclosures that you can install multiple drives in. These enclosures use an embedded Linux so that you can then setup a RAID array. This way the RAID calculations and read/writes are all done outside of Windows.

Is RAID needed with SSD?

Some administrators feel that solid state drive (SSD) redundant arrays of independent disks (RAID) are no longer necessary, or are even a hindrance in some cases. Still, the system remains a popular means of ensuring data availability and storage redundancy.

Can I RAID SSD and HDD?

To be honest, you will not benefit from adding a solid state drive to HDD RAID 0. It is always suggested to utilize the same type of drives in one RAID system. They should be in the same architecture. Otherwise, the array will be pretty unstable and more prone to fail.

  8. Select Create Array from the main menu.

Can RAID 10 have different size drives?

In RAID 10, do all drives need to be the same specification in terms of size, speed, latency, etc? The only absolute requirement for matching drive specs in a RAID 10 array is that the drives must be of the same architecture, e.g., all SAS or SATA.
