Can you use stranded wire in electrical box?
There are limitations on the bend radius of larger wire that cause stranded wire to be used. It becomes very difficult to handle solid wire in larger gauges. The wires that bring power to the box are not working.
Can you pigtail a neutral wire?
When making a pigtail, choose a scrap of wire with insulation that is the same color as the circuit wires you are connecting: white pigtails when connecting to neutral wires, red or black when connecting to hot wires, green or bare copper when connecting to grounding wires.
Can you pigtail stranded wire?
As long as all the equipment is listed for the use, there’s no problem using stranded wire. The UL White Book says that screw terminals and pressure plate terminals can be used with both solid and stranded wire.
What kind of wire is used as a pigtail?
I replaced a fixture today that had a piece of 12Ga stranded (probably THHN) wire used as a pigtail. The building has some wiring in conduit (other wires in this box were solid), so I’m guessing that’s what the prior person had handy.
Can I use 14-10awg stranded wire for device termination?
As we all know, some device termination types do not accept stranded wire (14-10AWG), which is quite a shame on a conduit job or when using stranded THHN for pigtailing.
Can I crimp a stranded wire to make it solid?
However, in some applications, such as when terminating under a terminal block, a bootlace ferrule (such as the ones shown below) can be crimped on the end of a stranded wire to effectively “make it solid” for termination purposes.
Can I use a twist-on wire connector for solid wire connectors?
Wire connectors (including twist-on wire connectors) can be used for both solid and stranded wire sizes between 30-10 AWG, in combinations listed by the manufacturer. Unless they are clearly marked to be used with one type or the other.
