Why are there no pictures of the far side of the moon?

Useful observation of the parts of the far side of the Moon occasionally visible from Earth is difficult because of the low viewing angle from Earth (they cannot be observed “full on”).

What happened to the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter?

In May 2015, LRO’s orbit was altered to fly 20 km (12 mi) above the Moon’s south pole, allowing higher resolution data to be obtained from the Lunar Orbiter Laser Altimeter (LOLA) and Diviner instruments over the permanently shadowed craters there. In 2019, LRO found the crash site of Indian moon lander Vikram.

Not even the Hubble Space Telescope can discern evidence of the Apollo landings. The laws of optics define its limits. No problem for NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO), which can dip as low as 31 miles (50 km) from the lunar surface, close enough to image each landing site in remarkable detail.

The Moon orbits Earth once every 27.3 days and spins on its axis once every 27.3 days. This means that although the Moon is rotating, it always keeps one face toward us. Known as “synchronous rotation,” this is why we only ever see the Moon’s nearside from Earth.

Can you see an American flag on the moon with a telescope? Even the powerful Hubble Space Telescope isn’t strong enough to capture pictures of the flags on the moon. But the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, the unmanned spacecraft launched in 2009, is equipped with cameras to photograph the moon’s surface.
