Why do most Pacific islands have volcanoes?
Formation of island arcs on the Pacific margins, mostly due to subduction of the Pacific Plate and its now extinct contemporaries (in particular the Kula and Izanagi plates). As the lithosphere descends into the mantle, the upper layers release water that reduces the melting point of the surrounding mantle.
Why are islands forming on the Pacific plate?
In areas where the plates come together, sometimes volcanoes will form. Volcanoes can also form in the middle of a plate, where magma rises upward until it erupts on the seafloor, at what is called a “hot spot.” The Hawaiian Islands were formed by such a hot spot occurring in the middle of the Pacific Plate.

How are high Pacific islands formed?
High Islands, also called volcanic islands, are formed by volcanic activities. As the volcano erupts, it builds up layers of lava that may eventually break to the surface of the water to form an island. When the volcano is still below the sea level it is called a seamount.
Why are there so many volcanoes in the Pacific Northwest?
The distribution of volcanoes in the northwest and Alaska is the result of plate tectonics. In the northwest, the oceanic Farallon Plate is being pushed beneath (subducted) the continental margin of the North American Plate. The melt, called magma, rises to the surface to build volcanoes.
What island continent is not within a major volcanic earthquake area?
The Kerguelen Plateau is within the Antarctic Plate but it is not part of the Antarctic Continent. As with the interior area of all tectonic plates, earthquakes can and do occur in Antarctica, but they are much less frequent than earthquakes on the plate boundaries.
