It’s almost been a full year since Icelandic budget airline WOW Air suspended operations and declared bankruptcy. In doing so, thousands of passengers were left stranded – those without proper insurance losing their unused airfare. Since then we’ve seen the collapse of a few more carriers.

In March 2019, Wow Air abruptly stopped all operations and grounded its fleet, leaving thousands of passengers stranded at the Keflavik Airport in Iceland as well as other cities throughout Europe and North America.

Why did wow airlines fail?

In a Financial Times interview, WOW Air CEO Skuli Mogensen stated that the reason the airline essentially failed was their decision to hire a fleet of wide-body Airbus A330s (which added up to significantly higher fuel costs).
