As mentioned above, both Kubuntu and Ubuntu are free and open-sourced, but they are different in GUI because Kubuntu uses KDE and Ubuntu uses GNOME. There is no doubt that Ubuntu is an excellent operating system, but Kubuntu is better when it comes to the user interface and its performance.

Kubuntu is completely different desktop from Lubuntu. Its sharp more modern looking distro. With Plasma 5 you wont feel you are left out in OS war. Its better than windows 10 look and feel and functional as it should be.

Is Kubuntu different from Ubuntu?

So to put it simply, Ubuntu and Kubuntu are basically identical to each other. Kubuntu uses the KDE (K Desktop Environment) that tries to imitate the look and feel of the windows operating system while Ubuntu uses the Gnome and doesn’t try to emulate windows in any way.

I use both Kubuntu and Ubuntu, and I prefer Ubuntu for everyday use. I recommend Kubuntu only for machines with less than 2Gb RAM, and even then Lubuntu may be a better choice as it is lighter. The only major different point is launch bar, that in Ubuntu is on left side, KDE bottom, Gnome above.

How much storage does Kubuntu need?

Requires at least 9 GB fixed-size Virtual Disk Image. With 512 MB RAM, choose either “Try Kubuntu” or “Install Kubuntu”; otherwise, running the installer from desktop will not work as expected. With 768 MB RAM, user can first choose “Try Kubuntu” and later can also run the installer from the live desktop.
