There is no specific ASD diet, but removing certain proteins may relieve symptoms. The gluten-free, casein-free (GFCF) diet has the most research and is one of the most common dietary interventions. About 25\% of my patients find relief and improvement with this diet.

At every meal and snack time, offer a protein, vegetable or fruit, and a starch along with a small amount of her favorite chips. This may sound like a lot. But when a child is struggling with eating, we want to use every opportunity to provide a variety of nutritious options. Offer smaller quantities during snack time, but still offer options.

The idea is to sit at a table together for at least 15 minutes. Your daughter may not eat anything at first. That’s okay. As she watches others eat, she’ll be exposed to the smell, sight and sounds of food being eaten. These are positive steps toward her tasting and eating the foods.

However some resistant eaters will only eat from one food group they have chosen which is often carbohydrates, but can even be meat. Children with oral motor impairments may only accept pureed foods that do not require chewing. These types of behaviors cause fear and frustration in parents and caregivers.
