What has being a nurse taught you?

Nursing taught us to look for meaning in everyday life and explore the cause-and-effect relationships of health and disease. Our patients taught us what’s really important in life—health, family, friends, meaningful work.

What inspires you to be a nurse?

The dedication they have to caring and helping those in need. They give so much of themselves to others. Based on my personal experiences, as well as getting to know hundreds of nurses/ nurse leaders over the past 4 years, what I find most inspiring is their willingness to sacrifice for the sake of their patients.

What lessons do you need to become a nurse?

Nursing degree requirements To get onto a nursing degree, you generally need an A level, Advanced Higher or equivalent qualification in at least one science from biology, chemistry, physics, applied science, health and social care, psychology, sociology or physical education, plus two other subjects.

What was the most valuable lesson you learned during your clinicals that you can apply to your role as a new grad RN?

“The most valuable lesson I have learned in clinical is to have great listening AND communication skills. Listening and communicating with your instructor, fellow peers, and your preceptors during clinical will greatly enhance your knowledge! Also, enjoy every minute of your clinical experience.

What is satisfying about being a nurse?

As a nurse, you are given the privilege and delicate responsibility of caring for the injured, sick and dying. This gives you the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of others by giving care to others in their time of need, just as you would want someone to do for you if you were in their place.

What do you enjoy about being a nurse?

As nurses, we have the opportunity to empower our patients and their families with knowledge. When I see that a patient understands their disease process and the plan of care, it is an awesome feeling. Nurses have the ability to bring understanding and peace during what can be a confusing or challenging time.
