The CEFR is a system that is used to measure and describe language levels for foreign language learners. It is ‘language neutral’ so it can be used for any language. Since then it has been translated into 37 languages and is now used all over the world, not just in Europe.

Can CEFR replace IELTS?

The relationships between the different possible scores are shown in the diagram below. You can see that an IELTS band score of 7.0 is equivalent to a CEFR level of C1, and an IELTS band score of 4.5 is equivalent to a CEFR level of B1.
