Why there is no entropy change in quasi-static process?

Why there is no entropy change in quasi-static process?

A quasi-static process is one which passes through a sequence of equilibrium states. In each equilibrium state, the entropy has to be at its maximum value. Thus, the entropy cannot increase in passing from one equilibrium state to another. So overall the entropy can’t change in a quasi-static process either.

Why entropy is defined only for reversible process?

The entropy of various parts of the system may change, but the total change is zero. Furthermore, the system does not affect the entropy of its surroundings, since heat transfer between them does not occur. Thus the reversible process changes neither the total entropy of the system nor the entropy of its surroundings.

Does entropy change in turbine?

Therefore, the entropy change of a system is zero if the state of the system does not change during the process. For example entropy change of steady flow devices such as nozzles, compressors, turbines, pumps, and heat exchangers is zero during steady operation.

Why Quasistatic process is reversible?

A process, carried out in a stepwise manner, becomes quasi-static when the number of intermediate steps tends to infinity. Usually, the net entropy production approaches zero under this limiting condition. Hence, such cases are termed reversible.

What is Quasistatic system?

In thermodynamics, a quasi-static process (also known as a quasi-equilibrium process. From the Latin quasi, meaning ‘as if’), is a thermodynamic process that happens slowly enough for the system to remain in internal thermodynamic equilibrium. The theoretical term ‘reversible process’ is sometimes used.

Why change in entropy is inversely proportional to temperature?

When a certain amount of energy is absorbed at low temperature , the disorder is more than at higher temperature. This shows that entropy is inversely proportional to temperature.

Does entropy decrease in a turbine?

These include turbines, compressors and aircraft jet nozzles. We define the turbine adiabatic efficiency as follows: Notice that for the for the actual turbine there will always be an increase in entropy, which means that the turbine adiabatic efficiency will always be less than 100\%.

Why entropy always increases in irreversible process?

In a reversible process, the entropy of the universe stays unchanged, but in an irreversible (spontaneous) process, the entropy of the universe increases. Energy always flows downhill, which causes entropy to increase.

What is the difference between quasistatic and reversible process?

To summary, quasistatic process is the process in which every instantaneous states is equilibrium;reversible process is the quasistatic process in which the entropy does not increase, but the quasistatic is not necessarily a reversible, that depents on the entropy—increasing or not.
