Speaking a foreign language like a native speaker is the dream for many language learners. Unfortunately, not many learners have been able to achieve this goal. We know it’s possible to reach such a level of fluency because there are learners out there who have.
What is native English speaker?
“Someone who speaks that language as their first language, rather than having learned it as a foreign language” So, technically, anyone with English as a first language from birth is a ‘native English speaker’.
What is the difference between fluent and native speakers?
Native means you grew up with the language, knowing it well (culturally especially). Fluent means that you have attained a high level with the language and usually learnt it when you were older.
Why can’t native English speakers understand me?
Reason #5: You speak English with less confidence than you do in your native language. The last reason that native English speakers might not understand you is because you speak English with less confidence than you do in your native language. We’ve all been there!
Should non-native speakers focus on clarity or accent?
This is why I often tell non-native speakers to focus on clarity. If you’re doing the best you can to communicate as clearly as possible, and using the features of English like stress and intonation that we use to express ourselves more effectively, you don’t have to worry about so many of the details of your accent.

Most people say they want to speak with a native speaker, but are actually too scared to. In fact, for most people, this is the biggest barrier to fluency. Because of this, they either resist looking for opportunities to speak, or when they get the chance, they freeze up or find an excuse not to practice.
