To confirm a skull fracture, doctors use computed tomography (CT). CT is better than magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for diagnosing skull fractures. However, CT or MRI is usually done to check for brain damage. X-rays of the skull are rarely helpful in people who had a head injury.

Will an MRI show an old head injury?

MRI might show brain atrophy long after the injury, which results when injured or dead brain tissue is reabsorbed after TBI. Since injured brain tissue might not fully recover after TBI, doctors might detect TBI-related changes many years following an injury.
