How long does natural soaps last?

Although handmade natural soaps usually get better with age, we recommend using our soaps within 12 months of purchase. Our scented soaps should be used within 3 months after removing them from the box. Although our soaps will not be “spoiled” after that time, you may notice some changes as natural soap ages.

How long does homemade soap keep?

Some oils, like flax seed oil, only stay fresh for 6 months to 1 year while others, such as jojoba oil, may keep longer than 2 years. Oils that have undergone saponification won’t turn rancid or affect the soap negatively at all because they have combined with the lye molecules to form soap.

Caring for Your Soaps

  1. Store soaps not in use in a covered container. Soaps not in use should be stored in a covered container that allows air circulation, and in a cool, dry location.
  2. Store similar scents together.
  3. Use a soap dish that offers drainage (e.g. slotted) so the soap can dry between uses.

Does homemade Castile Soap go bad?

Castile soap is ultra concentrated so one big bottle can last a really long time. But remember that its shelf life is about three years. After this time, the oils can go rancid.

Does lye soap expire?

The shelf life of lye, sodium hydroxide, when properly stored is one year. After a year it is possible for your lye to work, but you should do a small batch to test whether the lye is still good. If it is actually expired, then it may not come to trace quickly or could separate after it is poured or set up.
