Is a survival kit necessary?

In the event of an emergency, it is important to have the right supplies on hand. Emergency prepared kits or disaster kits can help people survive after a disaster occurs. The first 72 hours after an emergency are incredibly important. Having the right survival gear helps people treat wounds, find help and more.

What should you carry in a survival kit?

Basic Disaster Supplies Kit

  • Water (one gallon per person per day for several days, for drinking and sanitation)
  • Food (at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food)
  • Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert.
  • Flashlight.
  • First aid kit.
  • Extra batteries.
  • Whistle (to signal for help)

Where should you keep your survival kit?

A desk drawer, or storage locker locate near your office or work area is a good place to keep it. Keep a three day supply of food and water in your kit and at a minimum includes these items: flashlight, dust mask, emergency blanket, basic first aid kit.

How long can a survival kit last?

How many days should my emergency preparedness kit last? While there’s no way to know how long you’ll need to survive on your own after a natural disaster or other emergency, planning for a minimum of three days of survival is a good starting point. Once you have a three days’ supply, try to build up to a full week.

When should you inventory your survival kits?

We recommend doing this every 3-6 months, or at least a month in advance of any kind of problematic time of year, such as hurricane season. While inspecting your items, be sure to do the following: Take visual notes of all of your food, water, medical supplies, and other emergency items.
