Can ABS be bonded to PVC?

It is possible to join ABS to PVC, but it is only supposed to be done with a mechanical coupling, not glued. There are two commonly used plastics for drain, waste, and vent pipes inside of homes: ABS (black) and PVC (white, mostly).

PVC piping offers more flexibility, but ABS is a stronger piping and can resist a higher shock. ABS piping are connected through special cement, a one step process, while PVC piping must be primed before cemented together, a two step process.

Can you use transition cement on PVC to PVC?

One exception is transition cement, used to weld ABS pipe and PVC pipe together. This transition cement is green in color so it’s easy to recognize. The other exception is all-purpose cement which can be used to join any of the three pipes to each other.
