Lay a starting row at the bottom of the roof along the edge. However, make sure that you do not nail into the tar strip. Also place a nail 2 inches from each end of the shingle, in line with the other two. In all, use four nails per 3-tab shingle.

Do you need a starter strip for shingles?

The starter strip is crucial because it adheres to the shingles on the edges of your roof and protects them from the elements. Without starter strip shingles, a gust of wind would have no trouble sneaking under the shingles on the edges of your roof and blowing them up, and perhaps even off, your roof.

Applying starter strip shingles should fall on your roof’s eaves and gables or rake edges. Applying it on the eaves helps cover the joints between the finished shingles to provide waterproofing. Installing a starter shingle on your gables carries a different function from using it to the eaves.
