What is LUN and WWN?

What is LUN and WWN?

LUN zoning is a method of configuring storage area network (SAN) fabric to match logical unit numbers (LUNs ) so that end device access is limited to the appropriate storage devices. Soft zoning is implemented through World-Wide Names (WWN). A WWN is a unique identifier that is hard-coded into a Fibre Channel device.

What exactly is a LUN?

In computer storage, a logical unit number, or LUN, is a number used to identify a logical unit, which is a device addressed by the SCSI protocol or by Storage Area Network protocols that encapsulate SCSI, such as Fibre Channel or iSCSI.

What is the difference between LUN Masking and zoning?

LUN masking takes place at either the host bus adapter (HBA) or storage controller, and restricts the hosts’ ability to access specific LUNs. LUN zoning generally takes place on storage-area network (SAN) switches and compartmentalises the SAN fabric, grouping hosts and storage arrays into zones.

What is a LUN hardware?

In simple terms, a logical unit number (LUN) is a slice or portion of a configured set of disks that is presentable to a host and mounted as a volume within the OS. The disks in an array are usually configured into smaller sets (RAID groups) to provide protection against failure.

What’s the difference between a Lun and a volume?

A LUN is a logical volume from the point of view of the storage. From the client point of view the LUN it is a disc volume that can be partitioned. Volume is a generic term. It means a contiguous storage area.

Can I change the Lun type from image to Linux?

A Windows LUN was configured with the multiprotocol type of image when it should have been set to type linux. Is there anyway to change this without disrupting the LUN? It is usually not possible to modify the LUN type after a LUN has been created. A workaround is to create a new LUN and use host tools to copy data from the old to the new LUN.

What is a LUN VMware?

A LUN is a ‘logical unit’, which basically means a piece of storage created on a SAN (storage area network). To create a LUN, you create storage from a RAID that was created on a SAN. For purposes of VMware, you then present that LUN to your ESX hosts as storage (also known as a datastore).

What is the use of Lun WWN?

A LUN may be used with any device which supports read/write operations , such as a tape drive, but is most often used to refer to a logical disk as created on a SAN. Though not technically correct, the term “LUN” is often also used to refer to the logical disk itself.
